  • DuPont Refinish - Colour Tool Switch to DVDs

    6 February, 2012

This note is to advise of a likely future switch from CDs to DVDs for colour tools.
The amount of data which can be stored on a single CD is not infinite! As time goes by, the number of colour formulas in our database continues to grow, while colour formula CDs also contain a lot of additional information, such as MSDSs and software to operate the Acquire spectrophotometer. And with every update more colour formulas are being added! We are getting pretty close to the stage where a single CD will not be large enough to contain all the formulas and other information that we need to provide to customers.

There are several options for how we deal with this, but we believe a move from a single CD to a single DVD is the best option, compared to other choices like deleting old formulas from the CD, or switching to 2 CDs.

A factor in our thinking is the development of exciting new technologies by DuPont in Europe and the USA which will further improve the performance of our spectros, especially for customers using the new generation waterborne paints. These technologies also require additional space on colour formula CDs.

For most customers, there is absolutely no problem in using a DVD, because the bodyshop computer has a DVD drive. But we know that for some customers, that will not be the case. There will therefore be other options available, such as updating customer computers via data stored on a USB drive. However, customers should be encouraged to update their computer to have a DVD drive available if they do not already do so.

The timing for a switch to DVDs is not yet set. However, it’s quite likely that at least some colour tools will be switched from CDs to DVDs during 2012.
